At one stage we thought we were going to miss this event because the RE is poorly, but thanks to 'friend' Steve loaning us his Marshall bodied 1972 'Royal Blue' Bristol LHBristol Commercial Vehicles Light Horizontal engined coach, five of us made the trip and a very good day was enjoyed by all. Lee returns from St Ives on the 2011 'running day' in Colin's Bristol VRBristol VR was Bristol's rear-engined bus chassis, designed as a competitor to the Leyland Atlantean and Daimler Fleetline. 1203/38847(LFJ 847W) which interestingly along with Bristol VR 1141(AFJ 706T) owned by the CBPSCornwall Bus Preservation Society - formed by a group of bus and coach enthusiasts who are involved in maintaining, restoring and preserving a number of buses which saw operational service in Cornwall that have been bought, donated or even loaned to members of the group, were the two vehicles painted in the green and cream livery of Western National in 1999 to celebrate 70 years of the Company. That livery is visible on Martin's 1958 Bristol LD 1943(VDV 760) at the bus station.
Now resident back in the Bristol area, this Volvo CitybusLivery used on Plymouth City Buses was numbered 38008(D708 GHY) by First Group and until last year she was based here in Cornwall. So as not to be accused of 'running early' we wait at the stop on our return from Praa Sands on the 2011 'running day'.
As in previous years, the Running Day commences with the cavalcade of vehicles making their way through the streets of Penzance. Here our chairman, Mel is at the wheel of 1968 Bristol LHBristol Commercial Vehicles Light Horizontal engined 716(MUO 328F) followed by one of the two LeylandLeyland Bus was a British bus manufacturer. It emerged from the Rover Group (formerly British Leyland) as a management buyout of the bus business. It was subsequently acquired by Volvo Buses in 1988 and the name finally disappeared in 1993 National's that took part.
50 years after the Guy FBB 1268(YF 714) entered service, convertible 'open topper' Bristol VRBristol VR was Bristol's rear-engined bus chassis, designed as a competitor to the Leyland Atlantean and Daimler Fleetline. 941/1003(VDV 141S) commenced work in the west country. On the CBPSCornwall Bus Preservation Society - formed by a group of bus and coach enthusiasts who are involved in maintaining, restoring and preserving a number of buses which saw operational service in Cornwall that have been bought, donated or even loaned to members of the group Running Day, the VR poses briefly alongside Colin Billington's beautfully restored Guy, both in the brown and cream livery of the Great Western Railway which was so important in Cornwall.
It's hard to believe but it was 53 years ago when this Bristol LD 1943(VDV 760) commenced service with Western National. Full marks to Martin for ensuring we can still enjoy this splendid bus today. Pictured at Perranuthnoe about to depart on the 16.45 hours service to Penzance.
Former Plymouth CitybusLivery used on Plymouth City Buses Dennis Pointer Dart (K105 SFJ) with Bristol LHS 1560(FDV 790V) and Steve's Marshall bodied 'Royal Blue' Bristol LHBristol Commercial Vehicles Light Horizontal engined 1318(BDV 318L) at Penzance bus station on the Running Day.
Not wishing to 'run early', I have paused in Botallack for the photographers on service 10B(I know it says B10 but we couldn't get the B on the right!) to St Just on a sunny Sunday 'Running Day' afternoon.
Having arrived at St Ives by two different routes, Bristol VRBristol VR was Bristol's rear-engined bus chassis, designed as a competitor to the Leyland Atlantean and Daimler Fleetline. 1075(BFJ 175L) from 1973 and Bristol LHBristol Commercial Vehicles Light Horizontal engined 716(MUO 328F) from 1968 enjoy a breather at what may be the most 'picturesque' bus station in the Country.
Fully restored after many years hard work is Colin Billington's Guy FBB 1268(YF 714) in prestine Great Western Railway's livery at Penzance bus station.
